Background of the Study
Cloud computing has revolutionized data management in educational institutions, offering scalable, flexible, and cost-effective solutions for data storage and backup. At Benue State University, Makurdi, the increasing volume of academic, administrative, and research data demands reliable and secure backup systems. Cloud computing services offer a promising solution, allowing for off-site storage and ensuring data redundancy, security, and easy access. This transition to cloud-based services is crucial for institutions looking to protect their data from local system failures, natural disasters, or cyber-attacks. Cloud backup services also offer features like automated backup scheduling, remote access, and enhanced disaster recovery options, which are vital for the continuity of academic operations. This study will evaluate the effectiveness of cloud computing services in supporting data backup operations at Benue State University, considering factors such as data security, reliability, cost, and scalability.
Statement of the Problem
Benue State University, Makurdi, currently faces challenges in securing and managing its vast amount of academic, administrative, and research data. Traditional methods of data backup, such as external hard drives or on-campus servers, have limitations related to security, scalability, and accessibility. These methods are often prone to data loss due to hardware failures or inadequate disaster recovery planning. Moreover, the increasing need for real-time data access and storage efficiency has outgrown the university’s existing data backup infrastructure. The need for a more robust, scalable, and secure solution has led to the consideration of cloud computing as a potential tool to streamline data backup services. However, the extent to which cloud computing services can meet the university’s specific needs remains an open question.

Significance of the Study
This study will provide insights into the potential of cloud computing services to enhance data backup systems at Benue State University, Makurdi. By evaluating cloud services’ security, reliability, cost, and scalability, the study will offer practical recommendations for university administrators seeking to improve their data backup solutions. The findings will also contribute to the broader academic community’s understanding of cloud-based data management in higher education institutions.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on evaluating the effectiveness of cloud computing services for data backup at Benue State University, Makurdi, located in Makurdi LGA, Benue State. It will specifically analyze cloud-based services in comparison to traditional data backup methods used at the university. The study will not address other aspects of cloud computing, such as cloud storage for research data or the use of cloud platforms for teaching.
